Po dvojtýždennej kúre ibuprofenom som si dal dnes o 13:45 vytrhnúť boľavú osmičku vpravo hore. Zobral som si ho so sebou, namočil do Coly Zero a dal do chladničky, či sa rozpustí.

16-02-2009: Indian programmers
Dodatok k včerajšej zmienke o indických programátoroch, ktorý som objavil v diskusii.
I have worked on a vast number of offshoring/outsourcing projects and I have a pretty clear idea of what an Indian developer is like. First of all, indeed there are a few who are bright. But the vast majority have these problems:
1. They are sloppy coders. For example, I worked for a large Insurance company and we had huge projects in which we needed about 80 offshore members. Well, for example, I designed a feature using Hibernate and SOA and coded about a dozen complete examples. Well, I went off to work on something else and came back and looked at the code we were getting from the Indians. What a bunch of crap. Given a perfect example, they immediately started introducing sloppiness and magic numbers and basically showed that they did not understand. I brought it up with my manager and he agreed - after having looked at their code versus mine (he was a former coder) that they were producing crap. This was unfortunately common and we learned that they would fail unless we gave them a code-by-numbers instructions.
2. They cannot think up any new ideas. In my experience, we had this common problem that the Indians could not really invent anything. I was puzzled and even tried experiments, asking a few promising members to code up a solution to a problem. They could not come up with anything. I'm puzzled as to why but I think it may be the culture in the US of building things in childhood. In the US, we grow up building and dreaming up things and inventing. I have heard that other countries such as India do not do that, generally.
3. Willingness to code using worst practices. After about five years at the Insurance co, I moved to a large city where they had a contingent of Indians who had been there for years. Well, when I started examining their code, I found a host of worst-practices. And they fought me when I attempted to object and finally my manager saw what I was talking about and blew his top. They had no problem doing all their database calls from within a JSP, mingling model and view without a problem. They had no problem hard coding production passwords in JSPs - publically visible to anyone who knew how to click "View Source" Can you say SOX audit?
They didn't believe in putting their code in source control. They didn't believe in Java packages. They didn't believe in using an IDE! So, all of these things has been an awakening for me. If American companies begin to rely as they are on offshore programmers, I fear for the quality of the software that is produced.
Sure, there are many excellent Indian programmers. But the vast majority of them are just plain idiots. I have had experience with so many of them I look on that as a fact. It's not racist to state a fact that accords with my experience.

KB960715), ktorý nám odstavil aplikáciu. Nejaký zmrd sa rozhodol, že komponenty RefEdit a Flexgrid už nie sú podporované. Pri analýze som zistil, že MS Office sa zaujíma o nastavenia v subkey
Internet Explorer - to je taká tá indická logika. Vypotil som *.reg súbor, ktorým som to dočasne rozbehal vo Windows Vista, ale na firemnom Windows XP to ako inak, nefunguje. Tu nefunguje nič štandardne.
V poslednom čase už neprogramujem, len sa modlím. Aby zasa nejaký sabotér z
University of Delhi zamestnaný v Microsofte nevydal rozhodnutie o rolloute service packu, ktorý nám bez varovania (a hlavne bezdôvodne) odpáli nejakú funkcionalitu. A keď to aj urobí, budem musieť programovať nejaký odrb, pretože vo firme nemám ani práva spustiť *.reg súbor. Moja práca už snáď spočíva len v tom, že si naštudujem, kto čo do(píp)al, nájdem spôsob ako to o(píp)ať a spôsob ako vy(píp)ať s adminom, aby som nejakú záplatu vôbec mohol aplikovať. No a popri tom by som ešte mal aj programovať, akurát že netuším kedy.

Hotovo, kompletne som prešiel z Windows 2003 Server Enterprise na
64-bitovú Vistu. Windows 2003 mal zopár neduhov, napríklad častý
BSOD pri hraní CounterStrike - pravdepodobne spôsobený konfliktom medzi grafickou a TV kartou a podivné zvuky vychádzajúce zo zvukovky pri viac ako 3GB RAM. Upgradoval som na 8GB RAM, 36GB Raptor som vymenil za 150GB Velociraptor a ako bonus som k tomu pridal MIDI controller Behringer BCF2000. Velociraptor je o hodne rýchlejší, viď benchmarky.

Plánujem prechod na Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Zatiaľ ju mám nainštalovanú na
vmware virtual machine a zohnal som všetky potrebné 64-bitové ovládače. Dokonca už vo Viste nemusím inštalovať ovládač na DVD-RAM ani
klávesy. Momentálne triedim zbierku VST pluginov a sliedim po cenníkoch hardware. 36GB raptor mi už ako systémový disk nestačí (len taký
Garritan personal orchestra zhltne niekoľko GB) a tak špekulujem nad 150GB Velociraptorom a upgrade na 8GB RAMky, keď už prechádzam na tých 64-bitov. 40 evri za 4GB je dosť dobrá cena.
